Retrospect: Royal wedding scandals you need to know
As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tie the knot on Saturday, May 19, the whole world is following this historic event. And as this goes on, Legit.ng brings to you list of past royal weddings that were full of drama.
1. The former King of England tied the knot with an American divorcee
King Edward III, who abdicated the throne of England on December 11, 1936, got married to an American socialite, Wallis Simpson, who happened to be a divorcee.
The monarchy was thrown into chaos prior to the wedding because the lineage of the crown was changed. His brother, George VI ascended the throne after his brother abdicated it.
No members of Prince Edward's family attended the wedding, which was held in France.
2. Princess Diana mixed up Prince Charles’s name at their wedding
Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer married in 1981. The ceremony was viewed by 750 million people around the world.
While saying her vows at the altar, Diana said the wrong name. She mixed up Charles’s first and middle names, calling him 'Philip Charles' instead of 'Charles Philip'.
3. Princess Stephanie of Monaco tied the knot with her former bodyguard
It became a scandal when Princess Stephanie of Monaco had two kids before ever getting married. But the fact that the father of those kids was her bodyguard was an even bigger scandal.
The marriage, which was in 1995, was reluctantly approved to by her father, Prince Rainier — one year before Daniel Ducruet was caught on camera cheating on her with a woman who had won the title of “Miss Bare Bre*sts of Belgium.”
4. It was rumoured that Princess Charlene Wittstock tried to escape from marrying Prince Albert of Monaco
Shortly before Princess Charlene Wittstock of South Africa and Prince Albert of Monaco got married in 2011, it was revealed that Prince Albert may have fathered children with other women while he was dating Charlene.
After this information, it was rumoured that Charlene tried to escape the country three times to avoid marrying Prince Albert. It was claimed that she tried to take 'refuge' at a South African embassy, attempted to flee to Nice, France. She had her passport confiscated by palace officials.
However, the couple ended up marrying each other. During the wedding, Charlene sobbed at the altar.
After the couple denied the rumour, they filed a lawsuit in French court against L’Express Magazine, and settled a libel case against the Sunday Times.
5. Prince Ernst August Jr. of Hanover tied the knot with a fashion designer after fighting with his dad over castles
In 2017, Prince Ernst August Jr. of Hanover married a fashion designer named Ekaterina Malysheva.
But before they tied the knot, Prince Ernst's dad, Prince Ernst-August V, publicly announced his opposition to the marriage and ended up shunning the ceremony.
Speaking to a German newspaper, Prince Ernst-August V, said his decision to go public with his disapproval "was not easy for me, because it concerns my son. But I am forced to do so in order to preserve the interests of the House of Hanover and the property, including cultural property, which has been its property for centuries."
