5 things to know about Arsenal's new coach Unai Emery

The speculation of who to be Arsene Wenger's successor at Arsenal finally ended as Spanish coach Unai Emery takes the mantle at the legendary club.

The former Paris Saint-Germain manager was reportedly hired ahead of other applicants because the club's chiefs could not say no to his proposal.

The 46-year-old now has a daunting task at hand as the supporters will be expecting the ex-Sevilla coach to bring back the glory days.

Here are the four things you need to know about Emery

1. He was an ex-footballer

Both his father and grandfather were goalkeepers but he played as a left-sided midfielder during his spell in the game.

Emery played for Real Sociedad Team B but never graduated into the first team but made five La Liga appearances.

2. His breakthrough as a coach

While playing for Lorca, Emery had a serious knee injury that forced him into retirement but the club president offered him the vacant managerial position.

That same season he promoted the club into the second division and also helped Alemria back to La Liga in 2007.

3. He made his continental debut with Valencia

The 46-year-old spent four years with La Liga side Valencia from 2008 to 2012 and he managed players like David Villa, David Silva and Juan Mata.

The highlight of his campaign at the Estadio Mestalla was a quarter final loss to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League despite the team's had financial problems.

4. He won three consecutive continental trophies with Sevilla

After being sacked at Lokomotiv Moscow in 2012, Emery came back to Spain to manage Sevilla.

From 2013 to 2016 he led the club to three straight Europa League finals and won emerged victorious on those occasions before parting ways with the club.

5. He did not leave up to expectation in France

In his first season at Parc des Princes, Emery finished in second place in Ligue 1 and were knocked out by Barcelona in the Champions League last 16 in the famous 6-1 loss at Nou Camp.

He finished his second season with the Ligue 1 title and two domestic trophies but was again knocked out by Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16. Emery decide to leave the club in the summer.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had earlier reported Emery revealed the three players he would be signing at the Emirates.
