Farmers-herders clashes: MACBAN prefers cattle colony to ranching system

MACBAN has announced that it prefers the establishment of cattle colony than ranching system as proposed solution to the end farmers herdsmen crisis in Nasarawa state.
Nasarawa state MACBAN chairman, Hassan Muhammed made this known in a town hall meeting in Lafia, saying the ranching system is expensive and very difficult to manage.
According to him, cattle colony is cheaper, affordable and inclined with the norms, culture and tradition of Fulani herdsmen.

Hassan who described his people as peaceful and law abiding people of this country, blamed the anti-open grazing law in Benue state for fueling the clashes seen in the recent times between his kingsmen and the Tiv people.
“We have lost over 60 herdsmen and thousand of our cow also are no where to be found, they got lost due to hunger, while others were killed by the Tiv people from Benue state,” he informed.
Meanwhile, the Tiv Association, Nasarawa state branch through its chairman, Mr Boniface Effe, accused Fulani herdsmen of rendering havoc on Tivs communities due to the anti- open grazing law in Benue which he said does not have anything to do with Nasarawa state.
“Over 200 people lost their lives, while 8570 houses were destroyed in all the attacks carried out this year by suspected Fulani herdsmen,” he said.
He however called on the federal government to facilitate the process for Tiv people to return to their homes and begin this year farming.

In a related development, Noble Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has called on the international community to intervene in the series of herdsmen killings across the country.
According to Soyinka, the intervention is necessary to avoid a repeat of the Rwanda genocide in Nigeria. He also asked the federal government to take a decisive action to end what he described as the ongoing ethnic cleansing in some parts of the country.
