The killing of a pedestrian by a naval officer in Awaka community in Owerri, Imo state capital city had led to chaos in the area.
Residents of Awaka commenced a protest after one of the naval officers on a stop-and-search operation on Owerri/Umuahia Expressway allegedly shot dead a pedestrian.
Punch reports that youths of the area who began the protest seized the AK 47 belonging to the officer after the incident occurred at about 6pm on Saturday, May 26.
The youths were also said to have burnt a building which served as a temporary residence for officers of the navy in the area.
A resident of the area who pleaded anonymity said an officer had ordered one of his colleagues to shoot the victim.
“One of the naval officers ordered his colleague to shoot the victim and he immediately obeyed the instruction. The victim died on the spot.
“The youths of the community attacked the naval officers. One of their rifles was snatched from them .The building which served as a guest house for them since December was set ablaze," the resident added.
Confirming the incident, the police spokesperson in Imo state, Andrew Enwerem, said the AK 47 rifle belonging to the Nigerian Navy was snatched from the trigger-happy officer by the aggrieved inhabitants of the community. He however said the rifle has also been recovered by the police.
“We received a distress call that a naval officer at Awaka shot and killed a civilian. The state Commissioner of Police, Dasuuki Galadanchi, mobilised operatives of the community to the area.
“Our men engaged the angry youths who snatched one of the AK47 rifles belonging to the naval officers in a dialogue. The snatched AK47 was recovered by the police and the remains of the victim have been evacuated.
“The CP has ordered an immediate investigation into the shooting and killing of the civilian. The state CID has been asked to take over the investigation process," Andrew said.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that three individuals were arrested by the police in Adamawa state with a fresh human head. The suspects, the police said were arrested at Tashan-Baba village in Jada local government area of the state.
The police in the state said the individuals were arrested after they exhumed and cut-off the head from the corpse of a seven-year old girl, Blessing Johnson, a day after she was buried by her family.
