Merseyside police probe death threats aimed at Liverpool goalkeepr Karius after Champions League horror

- Merseyside police are investigating death threats made to Liverpool’s Loris Karius

- It is believed that the threats were coming after a horror show in the Champions League finals

- But the Merseyside police claimed that they are on top of the situation while warning members of the public to desist from issuing death threats

Merseyside police are investigating death threats made to Liverpool’s Loris Karius after his embarrassing performance in the Champions League final in Kiev against Real Madrid.

The Reds went down 3-1 to the Spaniards at the Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kiev last night after two catastrophic goalkeeping errors cost his team.

Karius gifted Karim Benzema the opening goal of the contest after releasing the ball right into the path of the lingering Frenchman who deflected the ball home into the empty net.

The German goalkeeper could not nothing about Gareth Bale’s stunning overhead kick early in the second half but was left embarrassed once again late on after fumbling the Welshman’s long range effort in the net.

Karius broke down in tears after the game and admitted that his mistakes cost Liverpool on the night.

The 24-year-old walked over to the travelling Reds fans to apologise for his errors and said after the game: "If I could go back in time, I would. I know I let them down.

"It's very hard right now but that's the life of a goalkeeper. You have to get your head up again."

Since the game Karius has been the focus of hundreds of posts on social media, the majority appearing to come from aggrieved Liverpool supporters.

Though some ex footballer have shown empathy with the young German goalkeeper admitting that 'we are all humans, and mistakes happens.'

But some angry fans have taken their anger too far and posted vile abuse and hate messages about the goalkeeper and his family.

A statement released today by Merseyside Police reads: “We can confirm officers are aware of a number of comments/threats made towards football players via social media.

"The force takes social media posts of this nature extremely seriously and any offences identified will be investigated.

"Merseyside Police would like to remind social media users than any offences including malicious communications and threatening behaviour will be investigated."

NAIJ.com previously reported that Liverpool goalkeeper, Loris Karius, has broken his silence on his horrible performance in the Champions League - and apologised to Liverpool fans for breaking their hearts.

Karius, 24, endured a horror-show in Kiev as he gifted two goals to allow Real Madrid to win 3-1 and be crowned European champions.

The German goalkeeper was in tears on the pitch at the final whistle, and had to be consoled by Real players as his Liverpool team-mates stayed away.
