On the occasion of the celebration of this year's Democracy Day, KTT equally congratulated all Nigerians for witnessing yet another great day in the history of the country.

Speaking further in his congratulatory message, he said: “What we are celebrating today is a harvest of fruits, the tree of which was planted by our prominent leaders including: Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sarduna of Sokoto, the great sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and their contemporaries; nurtured by great patriots like Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Malam Aminu Kano, K.O Mbadiwe, Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim, Chief Solomon Daushep Lar, Chief Joseph Tarka, Chief Aper Aku, Papa Ajasin, Chief Sam Mbakwe and their peers, and watered by the blood of people like Chief MKO Abiola, and other martyrs of democracy.”

KTT added that: “This tree was again looked after by our leaders like Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Musa Yaradua and Goodluck Jonathan, who maintained that his ambition was not worth the blood of any Nigerian both in words and deeds.”

KTT however urged Nigerians not to forget the great sacrifices that have been made by these leaders in ensuring that the country has a strong pedestal “that seeks to protect not only our rights and freedoms, but even our norms, democratic values and cultures.”

Meanwhile, Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has advised Nigerians not to take for granted the continued democratic dispensation the country has been enjoying for the past 19 years but guard against actions, statements and moves which can truncate the political process.

He also canvassed strict adherence to the principles of rule of law, separation of powers, sovereignty of parliament, independence of the judiciary, and freedom of the press, adding that “our constitutional institutions must be preserved and protected.”
