Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly desperate to land Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld before the 2018 World Cup.begins in Russia on June 14.

The Belgium international has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months.

The 29-year-old Alderweireld, started just 13 Premier League games for Spurs under Mauricio Pochettino last season.

The centre-back struggled with injuries, however, Alderweireld failed to break into Pochettino’s line-up after returning to full fitness.

And according to the Daily Star, Red Devils boss Mourinho is keen to sign the defender before the World Cup starts on June 14.

The United boss has been vocal about his summer transfer plans, with the Special One claiming earlier this year that he’ll look to tweak his squad.

"We are going to invest the basic to improve our squad," he said.

"There is always in the group of players, in the squad, there is always a player or a couple of players who are not playing a lot, and they will obviously try to leave, so we are going again to touch tweak our squad and to believe that more than a case of spend, spend, spend, is probably the evolution of our players.

"We have some young players that need to get, with both hands, opportunities with their evolution, so let's see."

Alderweireld could be joined at United by Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.
