Gunmen kill 2 police officers, injure another in Rivers attack

- Some gunmen attacked a police vehicle on patrol in Rivers state

- The attack led to the death of two police officers

- One other officer - an occupant of the vehicle - was rushed to the hospital following injuries sustained during the attack

Two police officers have been killed in an attack launched on a police patrol vehicle in Ada George area of Port Harcourt.

The attack which took place on Wednesday, May 30, at about 12.10 am was carried out by some unknown gunmen, The Punch reports.

Sources within the area said the gunmen stormed the area in a Toyota Sport Utility vehicle and opened fire on the police patrol vehicle at a close range. The attack left two out of three occupants of the vehicle dead while, the attackers left the scene of the crimes immediately.

However, the third officer who was left injured was rushed to a hospital in the area.

A police source: “The incident happened early on Wednesday. The gunmen were in a Toyota SUV and opened fire on the patrol vehicle of the policemen. Two died immediately. The third person was seriously injured, but he was rushed to a hospital."

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the police in Rivers state, Nnamdi Omoni, said the injured officer was in a critical condition.

“It happened after 12 midnight. The policemen were shot and two of them died. The one that was injured is currently in a hospital, but in a critical condition,” Omoni said.

Omoni also said that the vehicle used by the gunmen have been identified as investigation into the matter has been launched.

He also said that the police is mandated to arrest those behind the attack.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Africa's philanthropist and renowned businessman, Aliko Dangote, donated 150 operational vehicles to the police.

The vehicles donated through the Aliko Dangote Foundation were inaugurated by the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo.

The vice president during the inauguration urged major corporate organisations to emulate Dangote's gesture.

He said such acts would boost security infrastructure in the country.
