Two FUTA students invent a health device that can reduce the risk of blood clot

- Two undergraduates from FUTA are receiving major recognition for their life saving invention

- They reportedly created a device that reduces the risk of blood clot or deep vein thrombosis

- The impressive device earned them the title as winners of a Microsoft competition

Taofeek Olalekan Afeez and Alayande Abdulwaheed Abiola have made their family and school proud with their latest achievement. The engineering undergraduate from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) have created a device that reduces the risk of blood cloth.

The device which they named Real Drip was presented as part of their competition in the Imagine Cup National Finals organized by Microsoft in Nigeria which aims to give young developers the opportunity to acquire critical technical, business and team-building skills, while having fun along the way.

Taofeek and Alayande who formed the group, Team Trep, created the device which monitors the flow of intravenous fluid during IV treatment and notifies medical staff in real time.

The non-invasive device monitors the rate at which intravenous fluid drops (flow rate) and notifies the medical staff on duty in real time, for the timely removal of intravenous needle to prevent back flow of blood which may lead to pulmonary emb0lism if necessary action is not taken on time.

Speaking on behalf of the winning team, Taofeek Olalekan Afeez thanked Microsoft for the opportunity: “We are excited about this win. We would like to thank Microsoft for this opportunity. We look forward to competing at the global stage and do our country proud.”
