CAN warns INEC, security agencies against rigging ahead of Ekiti polls

- The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be on the alert against rigging at the forthcoming polls in Ekiti

- The CAN said that the ballot boxes are to be treated with utmost respect because they represent the will of the people to actualise growth, progress and development in the state

- It called on President Muhammadu Buhari to tackle the issue of insecurity in the country

Ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Ekiti fixed for Saturday, July 14, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has appealed to the police, the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) and other security agencies to beware of subverting the will of the people through shady deals, Vanguard reports.

The CAN admonished stakeholders of politics in the state on the sanctity of the ballot boxes which represent the people's zeal for development, stability and progress in all ramifications.

The religious body also appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to devise ways to curtail killings in the northeast and north central Nigeria, describing how Christians were being mowed down by suspected insurgents and killer herdsmen as gory and unacceptable to the body.

CAN made this statement at its plenary meeting held at First Baptist Church, Odo Ayedun in Ikole local government area of the state on Friday, June 1.

In a statement, CAN said: “We call on all Christians to go out and vote for candidates of their choices without fear or intimidation. We also appeal to losers to embrace the winner and equally strive to abide by the rules of elections.”

With reference to security, CAN remarked that many attacks by herdsmen had led to the destruction of innocent lives, an experience which the it said can trigger civil war if not properly handled.

It said: “We solicit that the federal government should expedite action for speedy release of Leah Sharibu, one of the schoolgirls who has been in the captivity for over three months.

“The federal government should not just release her, they should bring her captors and the perpetrators of all form of killings in Nigeria to book while we charge our people to be security conscious wherever they may be.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose, had reiterated his call for a free and fair gubernatorial election in the state on Saturday, July 14, stating that the people of the state would resist any attempt to rig the election.

He made the comment at the inauguration of the new judiciary complex in Ado-Ekiti, which was named after the state’s first chief judge and current Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti, Oba Ademola Ajakaye.
