5 person killed, several injured in communal clash in Kogi state

- A clash between two communities in Kogi state has led to the death of five people

- Hundreds of people have also reportedly fled the communities over the crisis

A renewed clash between the Igbirra and Bassa-komu communities in Kogi state in the early hours of Friday, June 1, has led to the death of no fewer than five people while several others have reportedly fled the communities.

The sun reports that an eye-witness said that some gunmen invaded Okpareke community in the early hours of Friday killing no fewer than five people including the son of the village head.

The source claimed that: “Immediately they invaded the community, they started shooting sporadically and embarked on looting properties including food items, a situation that provoked some of the youths to repel the attackers."

Hundreds of people have reportedly fled the town while some are getting ready to flee.

Governor Yahaya Bello has ordered for immediate re-enforcement of Mobile policemen, soldiers and other security agencies to augment the ones already on ground.

Legit.ng earlier reported that as security issues take a toll on the central states of Nigeria, the Kogi government, led by Yahaya Bello, has reportedly approved the recruitment of additional 500 vigilante operatives to protect its border areas against infiltration.

Colonel Hassan Aliu, who is the controller of state vigilante service, revealed this in Lokoja, the capital of the state on Tuesday, May 15.
