There are plans by the federal government to address the shortage of manpower in the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) by recruiting 6000 personnel.
The Tribune reports that the minister of interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, made the disclosure on Monday, June 4, during an assessment of the damages recorded in a jailbreak at the medium security prison in Minna, Niger state, that left a prison official and a motorcyclist dead.
He said the recruitment of the personnel will help beef up security in and around prison formations across the country.
“We are aware of inadequate manpower, so the Federal Government has concluded arrangements to recruit 6, 000 prison personnel to beef up security in and around prison formations across the country,” he said.
The minister disclosed that 28 prisoners out of the 210 inmates that escaped had been rearrested while 182 were still unaccounted for.
“We have identified some lapses and we are going to make some amendments, part of it is that the prison personnel on duty yesterday were inadequate,’’ he said.

Dambazau said that among the inmates that escaped were two whose execution was to be confirmed by a court.
He suggested that the two inmates might have masterminded the jailbreak.
NAIJ.com had reported that the police in Niger, said on Monday, June 4, that it had taken measures to ensure the arrest of the some prisoners that escaped from Minna medium security prison on Sunday, June 3.
Dibal Yakadi, the commissioner of police in Niger said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna that only 19 out of the 219 prisoners that escaped were arrested.
Yakadi also said that the command has deployed its personnel to motor parks across the state to track the escaped prisoners and appealed to the general public to assist security agencies in tracking and apprehending the escaped prisoners.
