I will press for imprisonment of John Oyegun - Governor Okorocha

- Governor Rochas Okorocha accuses John Oyegun of trying to destroy the APC because he is finishing his tenure as the party’s chairman

Governor Rochas Okorocha has threatened to press for the imprisonment of the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Oyegun, for reportedly disobeying a court order with regard to the party’s congresses in Imo state.

Okorocha who issued the threat in a statement through his spokesperson, Sam Onwuemeodo, on Tuesday, June 5, accused the party’s national chairman of trying to destroy the party because he was finishing his tenure as chairman.

The governor said party leaders must have overrated Oyegun’s capacity in allowing him succeed Chief Bisi Akande as the national chairman of APC, Vanguard reports.

Part of the statement read: “The worst thing that would have happened to APC is to allow Chief Oyegun to continue as the national chairman of the party.

“Chief Akande never tried to destroy the party when he was leaving as the pioneer chairman but Oyegun wants to destroy the party because he is leaving. He is not patriotic.

“In the case of Imo, he disobeyed two court orders with regard to the congresses in Imo and the inauguration of strange elements as state officials of the party just to get at Governor Okorocha because of the issue of elongation.

“And we have no option now than to ask our lawyers to press for his imprisonment and that of Osita Izunaso and all those who were involved in the lawlessness."

The statement said the only thing Chief Oyegun has achieved in his anger against Governor Okorocha is encouraging elements with no electoral value like Osita Okechukwu and those from Imo to be insulting the governor.

Meanwhile, Osita Okechukwu, the director-general of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has advised Governor Rochas Okorocha to leave the party if he so desires.

Okechukwu, who spoke with newsmen at the APC national secretariat in Abuja on Monday, June 4, said that the APC would win the 2019 elections without Okorocha, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

According to him, the actions and inactions of Okorocha have caused the APC more setbacks in the last four years in Imo and the south-east in general.

He said recent development that made the governor to lose at the party´s just concluded congresses was a grand plan to reposition APC toward winning elections in the southeast.
