- Doctors are set to transfer the newborns who are conjoined at the abdomen to the Komfo-Anokye hospital for further care
A 28-year-old woman, Asmawu Abdallah has given birth to Siamese twins at the Ejura Government Hospital in in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
The woman and her husband's expectations for the delivery of their second child on Saturday turned out to be a surprise after she gave birth to the twins.
According to Adomonline.com report, the twins are conjoined at the abdomen and doctors at the facility had to perform cesarean section to remove the babies.
The report states that the cesarean section which started at about 6:30pm, ended at 7pm Saturday night after the mother had undergone a similar surgery two years ago.
Dr Mensah Manye, the medical superintendent who carried out the C-section, said that conjoined twins are very rare and it is a first recorded case at the facility.
“This is the first time we are recording this at this facility. But this is not the first for me to carry out in the country,” Dr Manye said.
The medical superintendent revealed that he performed a more complicated surgery five years ago at New Edubiase hospital in the Ashanti region.
But added that the conjoined twins in that case shared vital organs like the heart and lung which were very delicate situation.
Dr. Manye in his media conversation noted that, the children died shortly after the delivery because the scan machine failed to indicate they were conjoined and doctors couldn’t considered a C-section.
