- Steven Nwatu was allegedly stripped and beaten to death by a faction of his subjects

- The crisis reportedly began with the setting up of a town union leadership

A traditional ruler Steven Nwatu in Ogbozinne community, Akpugo in Nkanu West local government area of Enugu state, has been reportedly beaten to death by his supposed subjects over a crisis that began about 10 years ago.

Premium Times reports that there are two versions to the story with one stating that the community’s problem commenced with the setting up of a town union leadership, which was resisted by the monarch.

According to the report, the community had been in crisis for over 10 years since the late ruler was enthroned because there had been no union.

As a result, those who wanted the union went on a protest march to the Enugu Government House before dragging the traditional ruler to court.

The version of the story claims that a group from his community attacked him when he came with police officers to effect an arrest.

According to the report, the group disarmed the policemen, beat the traditional ruler, then stripped him.

The traditional ruler was later rushed to Park Lane Hospital, Enugu, where he died.

The second version claims both factions were invited to the Government House on Monday, June 11, but the traditional ruler allegedly tried to stop the meeting before he was beaten to death.

The killing led to violence with over 200 houses reportedly razed by group loyal to the late ruler.

The incident was confirmed by the spokesperson of the police in Enugu state, Ebere Amaraizu.
