- Goodluck Jonathan describes Abdulsalami Abubakar as a man of peace and sagacity
- Jonathan notes that these attributes are the reasons he led the shortest transition to democratic government
- He calls Abubakar the 'peoples general'
Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Jonathan, on Wednesday, June 13, celebrated military general, Abdulsalami Abubakar, who is currently marking his 76th birthday.
Jonathan, in a short message obtained by NAIJ.com, described Abubakar as a man of peace and endowed with sagacity even as a military officer.
He said this was the reason the former head of state led the shortest transition of power to a democratically elected government in the country between 1998 and 1999.
He also called Abubakar ‘the peoples general’.
“On behalf of my family and I, l wish former head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, a happy 76th birthday.
“General Abubakar, although a military general, is a man of peace who is endowed with sagacity, the proof of which was made manifest in 1998-1999 when he midwifed the shortest, but most successful transition of power from the military to democratically elected civilians.
Indeed, Nigeria owes the ‘peoples general’ much more than we can afford to pay. It is fitting that your birthday falls close to the Eid-el-Fitr.
“Just as the Muslim Ummah celebrates the end of Ramadan, we celebrates you for ending military rule,” Jonathan said.
NAIJ.com earlier reported how Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, on Saturday, December 16, congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his 75th birthday.
Jonathan reportedly described Buhari as a statesman whose rare experience of leading Nigeria at different times, has earned him a special place in history.
