15,000 security personnel deployed for Rivers LG polls

- The Rivers state Police Command has revealed that 15,000 security personnel have been deployed for the Saturday, June 16 local council polls

- The states’ commissioner of Police also announced a total restriction of movement of persons, vehicles, both land and air, between the hours of 7am and 4pm

- He warned that persons and groups who default orders would be arrested and prosecuted

The commissioner of Police for Rivers state, Zaki Ahmed, has disclosed that 15,000 security personnel will be deployed for the state’s local council polls taking place on Saturday, June 16.

He made the disclosure in a statement released in Port-Harcourt on Thursday, June 14, The Nation reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the CP said the deployment was in order to ensure that the elections are free, fair, creditable and peaceful.

He said: “As a Command, we have braced up to the challenge of the elections and accordingly put in place adequate security measures to ensure that the local government elections are free, fair, credible and devoid of any violence.

“Consequently, we have drawn up our operations order which have captured all deployments including those of other security agencies. In all, about fifteen thousand (15,000) security personnel drawn from the Police and all the agencies will be deployed for the exercise.”

He added that in order to achieve a hitch-free exercise, restriction orders have been put in place, in consultation with heads of other security agencies in the state.

He said there would be “total restriction of movement of persons, vehicles, both land and air, between the hours of 7am to 4pm.”

He added: “Important personalities and politicians are barred from going to any voting centre with security details.”

Ahmed also said that “identified flash points will be manned by security personnel to prevent any security breach.”

The CP stressed that the polls will be monitored for maximum compliance, by Police and other security agencies; and warned that persons and groups who default the orders would be arrested and prosecuted.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that ahead of the controversial local government elections scheduled for Saturday, June 16, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state and the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have drawn a battle-line.

Wike accused the APC and its leaders in Rivers state of planning to cause mayhem and disrupt the elections in Abua/Odual, Akuku-Toru, Asari-Toru, Degema, Emohua, Ikwerre, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Opobo/Nkoro, and Tai, during a state broadcast on Thursday, June 14.
