PDP wins all 23 LG chairmanship seats in Rivers state poll

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers state has won the local government elections conducted across the 23 local government areas of the state.

The chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission, Justice Chukwunenye Uriri (retd.), who declared the results of the election on Sunday night, June 17, explained that the exercise was free, fair and devoid of violence, The Punch reports.

Legit.ng gathered that the All Progressives Congress (APC) boycotted the election, saying that it decided to obey court orders concerning the exercise that was conducted on Saturday, June 16.

Note that there are 23 local government areas, 319 electoral wards and 4,442 polling units in Rivers.

The winner of the council election in Ikwerre local government, Samuel Nwanosike, expressed gratitude to the people of the area for expressing their confidence in him through their votes.

Nwanosike, who got 78,662 votes, pointed out that he would fulfil all his campaign promises to the people of Ikwerre local government area.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state said that he received assurances from heads of security agencies in the state that adequate measures were in place to ensure a peaceful local council poll.

A media aide to the governor, Simeon Nwakaudu, in a statement on Thursday, June 14, quoted Wike as saying that government would “hold the security agencies professionally accountable should insecurity be experienced in the state in the course of the election."

The governor had also urged community leaders and members of the public to be alert and report suspicious characters and movements in their neighbourhoods to law enforcement agencies.
