Argentina superstar Lionel Messi has reportedly admitted that Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal are a better team.

The 30-year-old missed an imporatant chance to help his south American side conquer Iceland in their opening Group D encounter on Saturday, June 16.

Ronaldo on the other scored a hatrick to help his Portuguese side share the spoils against Spain a day before.

Meanwhile, according to Spanish news outlet Don Balon Messi is angry he might be losing out of winning his sixth Ballon d’Or after the incident.

Having won five Ballon d’Or awards each, both of them will fancy a chance of winning the title for the sixth time.

Both stars ended the season with silverware - Messi won La Liga with Barcelona this season, while Ronaldo won a third consecutive Champions League title with Real Madrid.

However, this year's award might be awarded to whoever triumphs in the World Cup in Russia.

Don Balon say Messi is already conceding defeat in the battle to be crowned the world’s best player because he reportedly believes Portugal have a better team than Argentina.

Speaking after the match Messi said: "The truth is that we can not win the match, add up the three points.

"I think we deserved to win the match, but now it's to follow and think about what's next.

"It hurts to lose the penalty, because it would give us the advantage. "And getting a difference changes the match, as did not happen in the first goal.

"But we could not keep because they drew fast."

Messi’s Argentina next play Croatia on Thursday after Ronaldo’s Portugal play Morocco on Wednesday.

NAIJ.com previously reported Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo showed his class once more as he scored three goals to help Portugal force Spain to a 3-3 draw in Group B opener at the Russia 2018 World Cup.

Portugal started the match impressively and it took them only four minute to score their first goal through Cristiano Ronaldo via a penalty.
