Borno police command confirms Boko Haram early morning attacks

The Borno police command has confirmed the Tuesday, June 19, early morning attack on Gajiram, the headquarters of Nganzai local government area of the state by suspected members of Boko Haram.

The attack comes barely three days after bombers attacked Damboa council area with Rocket Propelled Launchers and Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs which had claimed over 40 lives with 75 injured.

In a press statement signed by the police public relations officer, DSP Edet Okon, the command said: “Today at about 1740hrs, heavily armed Boko Haram terrorist in about eleven gun trucks attacked Gajiram town, headquarters of Nganzai LGA.

“Police personnel deployed to the area alongside troops of the Nigerian military engaged the terrorists and promptly repelled the attack. There was no casualty on the side of the police.

“Meanwhile, reinforcement has been mobilised and deployed to the town. Further development will be communicated to the press in due course.”

Meanwhile, a former Chief of Army Staff, General Alani Akinrinade (rtd), has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to change Nigeria’s security architecture to save the country from becoming a failed state under his watch.

Akinrinade, 78, a member of the defunct National Democratic Coalition, made the call in an exclusive interview with This Day newspapers.

His concerns came on the heels of another outcry by Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara state on Friday, June 15, that he was no longer the chief security officer of his state because he had no control over the security apparatus in the area, where hundreds of people have been killed in recent times by bandits.
