Protesters gather at APC secretariat, demand removal of Oyegun’s NWC

Protesters on Tuesday, June 19, gathered at the national office of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) demanding the removal of the John Odigie-Oyegun-led national working committee, Premium Times reports.

Legit.ng gathered that the protesters carried placards praising Adams Oshiomhole, a leading contender for the national chairmanship of the party.

One placard read “Oshiomhole is our winner”, another said “Oyegun and co leave our party secretariat now”.

The tenure of the present national working committee is due to end this month and new officials will be elected at the convention scheduled for Saturday, June 23.

An earlier proposal to extend the tenure of the Oyegun-led NWC was rejected by party leaders including President Muhammadu Buhari.

Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo state, has the backing of President Buhari and other key party leaders while Odigie-Oyegun has said he will not seek re-election.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, a member of the publicity sub-committee of the National Convention Organising Committee, said 20 positions had been returned unopposed while 42 posts are being contested.

Some of those officials who seek re-election are; national secretar; Mai Mala Bun, deputy national chairman (North); Lawan Shuaibu, national vice-chairmen; Hilard Etta (southsouth, Emma Eneukwu; (southeast, national organising secretary; Osita Izunaso and national auditor, George Muoghalu.

She also said there will be no “unity list”, referring to an list of candidates the party recommends to delegates to vote for on Saturday.

Legit.ng previously reported that Aminu Masari, chairman of the screening sub-committee of the APC National Convention Planning Committee, disclosed that over 176 members of the All Progressives Party (APC) are battling for various positions in the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) as well as other national offices.

Masari who disclosed this in Abuja on Sunday, June 10 promised that his panel would adhere strictly to the rules and regulations guiding the convention.
