Don’t allow politicians use you for selfish reasons - CJN warns judges

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, has told judges not to allow politicians use them as political tools when overseeing election matters.
Onnoghen made the charge on Friday, June 22, while swearing in 12 new justices of the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
He advised judicial officers to decide matters brought before them in accordance with the law not minding who wins or loses, This Day reports.

“Let me emphasise now that politics is here and election matters will be arising, as judges things should be done to bring down the temperature. We have to be careful so as not to be used as instruments for personal and intraparty squabble,” he said.
”Look at the matter before you, look at the law and use the law to decide. It doesn’t matter who wins or losses, be careful. We should use the law to decide all political matters according to law because judiciary remains the hope of every man whether superman or ordinary man.”
Walter said the judicial officers should see the elevation as a rather greater call for judicial service delivery, NAN reports.
“You should see your promotions not as a holiday but a call for more work.

"You are no longer strangers to the oath of office and oath of allegiance that you have taken.
“You must therefore truly be seen to abide by the Constitution and the Code of Conduct as well as the oaths you have sworn to.
“You are also expected to be guided by judicial precedence. It is when you follow judicial precedence that you would not invite trouble to yourselves," the CJN said.
Meanwhile, following the withdrawal of Justice Mojisola Dada by the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC), the court case of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Innoson Motors Nigeria Ltd. , Innocent Chukwuma, which was scheduled to take place on Friday, June 22, has been stalled.
The arraignment of Innocent Chukwuma known popularly as Innoson scheduled for Friday, June 22, at an Ikeja Special Offences Court has suffered a setback. This is following the withdrawal of Justice Mojisola Dada from the case.
Chukwuma is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Innoson Motors Nigeria Ltd. Justice Dada was withdrawn from the case on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC), responding to the February 12, petition of the automobile boss.
