Jorge Sampaoli is reportedly set to quit as Argentina coach after World Cup exit in the round of 16 following a meeting with his bosses.

Lionel Messi and his teammates scraped through Group D after drawing with debutants Iceland, losing to Croatia and edging out Nigeria in their last game.

La Albiceleste crashed out in the first knock-out stage in a 4-3 defeat to France with Kylian Mbappe running riot with a brace.

The 58-year-old manager took over as Argentina boss last June after Edgardo Bauza was sacked with the Seleccion on the brink of missing out in qualifying for Russia.

The former Chile boss chief managed to qualify Argentina to the World Cup, with a Lionel Messi hat-trick in the final fixture against Ecuador.

Sampaoli met with Argentine President Chiqui Tapia after the defeat to France and according to TNT Sports, he has reportedly decided to step down.

His assistant, Sebastian Beccacece, will also leave his role with the national team.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported Lionel Messi and his teammates crashed out of the World Cup.

Argentina lost to France in a seven-goal thriller which saw 19-year-old Kylian Mbappe score a brace in the match as it ended 4-3.

Antoine Griezmann and Benjamin Pavard scored the two other goals for Les Bleus while Angel Di Maria, Gabriel Mercado and Sergio Aguero got the goals for Jorge Sampaoli's side.
