Insecurity may be a threat to smooth running of 2019 polls - CAN expresses fears

Ahead of the 2019 presidential polls, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed fears that the the electoral process may be hindered owing to the terrible state of security in the country.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the southern states has said that the poor condition of security in the nation, especially in the north central region, is threat for the smooth running of the 2019 presidential election.

CAN said that the constant killings in the country indicates a complete collapse of the security system, Vanguard reports.

The religious organisation said that with the fragile and unstable state of security in Nigeria, the conduct of the 2019 presidential election is endangered.

Joseph Ajujungwa, the secretary of the organization, who spoke to newsmen in Enugu, said the Christian body had cause to worry because nothing concrete has been done about the trend so far.

He stated: “CAN is saddened that many days after that avoidable massacre of innocent Nigerians in Plateau State, government is still telling the same old-fashioned stories. For every murderous act of these marauders, the Federal Government and the security agencies reel out words of assurance that never yield any fruit.

“We restate once again that the incessant, senseless and wicked killings going on in the Middle Belt and South-East is totally unacceptable to us.”

Ajujungwa said it was more lamentable that whereas government had never prosecuted any of the armed herdsmen who are responsible for senseless killings, five Christians have been sentenced to death by hanging for killing one herder.

He said: “There is grave injustice in this country and they are not even pretending about it. These people are using AK 47 killing everybody; almost 200 were killed in Jos but the police never arrested any, army never arrested any, and we are saying there is security, there is no security in Nigeria. We are calling on the Federal Government.

"If we have security, let them rise to the challenge. This is not good for this democracy, especially at a time we are preparing for election and such thing is happening, I don’t think it is to the best interest of Nigeria. It is putting the election in jeopardy."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Most Reverend Alfred Adewale Martins, a Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, had appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the recent court verdict in Adamawa state which sentenced five Christian youths to death by hanging for the alleged murder of a herder.

The cleric said that the president “needs to consider the social import of this judgment and the social impact that it would have if the young men are put to death.” Martins advised the president to decry and object to such ruling.
