Police detain officer who shot dead corps member in Abuja

- Police has begun investigation into the killing of an NYSC member by an officer in Abuja

- The officer, Benjamin Peters, is already being detained by the police

- According to Peters, he heard a cry for help before firing at the vehicle which conveyed Linda and her colleagues

The Nigerian Police has detained the officer who shot a member of the National youth Service Corps (NYSC), Linda Angela Igwetu, in Abuja on Wednesday, July 4.

Benjamin Peters was said to have shot at the vehicle, Linda and two of her colleagues were riding in around Ceddi Plaza Central Business District in Abuja.

Punch reports that investigation into the killing of the corps member has began.

Also, sources at the police said the investigators would ascertain Peters’ claim that he heard a shout for help before firing the fatal shot that claimed Igwetu’s life.

It was also gathered that the police was also probing why the driver of the vehicle failed to stop after he was flagged down by officers at the check point.

While, the driver of the vehicle is already undergoing interrogation, other occupants of the car have also being invited to give account of what transpired before the incident.

However a sister to the late NYSC member, Chinenye said the police is yet to inform their family why Igwetu was shot dead by the trigger-happy police officer.

“All we were told is that they are investigating the incident, so we are waiting to hear from them,” Chinenye said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Linda was shot dead by Peters on Wednesday, July 4, when returning home with some colleagues.

Linda was supposed to have been among corps members who passed out on Thursday, July 5. Her killing by a trigger-happy police officer has caused an outrage both offline and online social media platforms.

Also, the Senate president Bukola Saraki has promised a Senate's investigation into the matter to ensure that the deceased gets justice.
