Spain’s La Roja interim manager Fernando Hierro has resigned from his coaching job with the Royal Spanish Football Federation, reports suggest.

According a UK Sun report, the Real Madrid legend who took over the position just before the ongoing world Cup in Russia, has also distanced himself from his former job as sports director.

Spain’s La Roja were dumped out of the Mundial by Russia’s Sbornaya after Igor Akinfeev proved too good to be beaten during their last 16 clash.

"After many kilometres of walking together, the Royal Spanish Football Federation and Fernando Hierro put an end to their relationship once the participation of Spain in the World Cup in Russia ended.

"The last Spanish coach declined to return to his previous position as sports director of the RFEF to seek new horizons and undertake new professional challenges.

"After two stages as sports director of the Federation, the first between 2007 and 2011 - coinciding with the best stage of the National Soccer Team, which won the 2008 European Championship with Luis Aragonés as coach and the 2010 World Cup with Vicente del Bosque- and the second from November 2017 until now, the RFEF wants to thank Fernando Hierro for his commitment and sense of responsibility when he takes the lead in the national team in extraordinary situations as well as in the performance of all his duties, which will always be his home.

"The Federation wants to highlight the professional and human values of an extraordinary athlete.

"Thanks for everything, Fernando!" the statement from Spanish Football Federation’s official website read in part.

Interestingly, the 50-year-old Hierro was handed the managerial position after ex-boss Lopetetgui quit the role to join the Los Blancos as new manager.

The former World Cup winners in 2010 played out a 3-3 draw with Portugal during his debut match claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Iran before battling Morocco to a 2-2 draw.

Former Chelsea forward Diego Costa was alleged to have clashed with Hierro before crashing out to Russia during the penalty shootout.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that that former World Cup winners Spain have named Fernando Hierro as their new coach ahead of their campaign at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Hierro's appointment comes just an hour after the Spanish Football Federation announced the exit of Julen Lopetegui after being named manager of Real Madrid.

Lopetegui's decision to have accepted Real Madrid job masterminded the rationale for him to have been axed by the Spanish Football Federation chiefs.
