A 33-year-old pastor, Benjamin Adu Boahene under training at the Trinity Theological Seminary in Accra, met his untimely death on the night of Sunday, July 8, when a car hit him against the wall of a house at Madina Estate, a suburb of Accra.
According to a report cited by Ghanaweb, the driver, a Nigerian, whose name is only given as Richmond, is reported to have been tipsy and was driving without a license.
According to the deceased’s prayer partners, they had just left a prayer meeting on the night of the tragedy.
He parked his car and strolled to buy some electrical materials and fruits for his wife around the taxi rank close to the district magistrate court at Madina Estate.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the driver, while reversing on top speed, knocked the man of God off the road and threw him over a small open gutter causing his head to hit the wall of a house in the process.
The pastor was eventually caught under the car and it took the screams of some onlookers to cause the driver to stop the car.
It took the intervention of a police officer from the La-Nkwatanan-Madina Divisonal Police headquarters to save the driver from irate residents who vowed to burn the driver in his car over the death of their neighbour fondly called Paa Kwadwo.
The deceased is reported to have only married early this year and is survived by a pregnant widow.
According to reports, the police arrived at the scene in a taxi in a bid to apprehend the driver and save him from mob attack.
The angry mob smashed the windscreen of the taxi in retaliation. A police pick-up was called in to convey the mortal remains of the pastor's body and has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary.
Siblings of the deceased are reported to have lodged a complaint at the La-Nkwatanan-Madina Divisional Police Headquarters after the incident.
Corporal Saani Mohammed officer on duty at the time of the report told the family of the deceased that the suspect was in custody and was being prepared for court.
