Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel will be face a season on the sidelines after undergoing knee a successful surgery.

The Dutch international under went surgery to fix a cruciate injury and will be out for at least eight months in a major blow.

The 25-year-old has played just four times for the Blues since arriving from Vitesse Arnhem in 2013.

He was loaned out to Stoke City and AC Milan before playing his last three seasons with Eredivise sidePSV Eindhoven.

The injury-hit ace has won the Eredivisie twice in his homeland but has been snubbed by the Stamford Bridge outfit.

And his latest setback looks like putting an end to a potential return to PSV leaving his career at a crossroads.

His agent, Karel Jansen, had hoped to fix the problem with rest and injections but Van Ginkel was forced to go under the knife.

Since damaging his cruciate ligament in 2013 he has endured a history of knee issues ever since.

On his latest blow, a Chelsea statement confirmed the operation had gone well.

It read: "Marco van Ginkel has undergone a procedure relating to the revision reconstruction of his anterior cruciate ligament and treatment of chondral damage in his knee.

"The expected recovery time is approximately eight months."

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had earlier reported that Chelsea have agreed in principle to sign £40m-rated defender Daniele Rugani from Serie A champions Juventus.

The centre-back has spent most of his career with the Serie A champions since he turned 18 but spent two years out on loan at Empoli, from 2013 to 2015.
