In his resolve to support good governance in the country, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president of Nigeria, though belonging to no particular political party, has said that he will continue to make attempts in saving the nation from political shipwreck.
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria's former president, on Saturday, July 14, said that he will do his utmost to help the country from shipwreck.
Obasanjo said this in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital when members of the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who paid him a visit. In a statement signed by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, he maintained his position on not going back in his resolve to save Nigeria from bad governance, Nigerian Tribune reports.
Obasanjo decried the state of things in the nation, the rampant killings and the poor level of security in Nigeria. He said: “I will join men and women in the country, and if necessary, lead them in retrieving and saving the country from shipwreck.”
The former president appealed to all members of parties to be on aware of fake news, rumours, blackmail, and seeds of discord that might be sown among them from external quarters.
However, Obasanjo, said he would provide more service to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He commended the leaders of opposition party for apologising to Nigerians on behalf of the party. He urged them to pay attention to four issues that are needed to bring PDP back to the reckoning of the people which are discipline, commitment, leadership and moral values.
Concerning the grand alliance, Obasanjo repeated and affirmed his belief and support for it, but he maintained that he would not be a member of any political group. The PDP national chairman, Uche Secondus, said the 21-man delegation was in Abeokuta to make four major submissions to the former president.
Secondus said: “Obasanjo is a national leader of this country. He is a father of the nation. So, we came to consult him. Our deliberation, although a little bit private, is connected to the 2019 polls. Yes, it is true Baba is no longer a member of the PDP, but he is a father of the nation. I believe that regardless of political parties, his direction is highly needed now to rescue Nigeria.
“Baba is helping our cause in the capacity of a former President. We cannot sit where the country is sliding. The media would do us a favour to let the world know Nigeria is sliding under APC government.
"We are going to reach out to all other former presidents. They all would be consulted. We are taking it bit by bit.”
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that Obasanjo, on Thursday, March 22, declared that three million Nigerians have registered with the Coalition Movement of Nigeria (CMN) formed to effect political change in the nation ahead of 2019.
NAIJ.com gathered that Obasanjo made the disclosure while speaking at the 14th Annual Lecture of Women in Management, Business and Public Service, held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos. He said the coalition in conjunction with other movements is the way out of the nation’s political problems.
