Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has chosen Barcelona's Lionel Messi as the greatest player to ever graced the game of football in history.

The 32-year-old recently completed a move to Major League Soccer side DC United after spending just one season at Everton on return to the club in 2017.

After his move to the MLS this summer, the England international was said to have been asked by online podcast Barstool Sports and without hesitation, he picked the Argentine over the Portuguese star.

His spontaneous response according to Dailymail came as a shock to those in the studio, with replies of 'oh, that was quick!'.

Both Rooney and Ronaldo were a a formidable attacking option during Sir Alex Ferguson's reign as United manager.

Playing with Rooney helped Ronaldo become one of the deadliest finishers in world football, hitting 118 goals in 292 games with a ratio of 0.4 strikes per match.

The news outlet further reported that the former England captain said no other player can come close to what Messi does with a football.

"They're both probably the best two players to ever play the game, I just think Messi is, in my eyes, the greatest ever."
