5 Taraba ethnic groups sign peace accord with Fulani group

- Various ethnic groups residing in Taraba state have signed a peace accord

- The groups agreed to live in peace and withdraw their militia against attacks on any of the groups

- They also agreed to direct security agencies to arrest and mop the state of all criminal elements

Five different ethnic groups in Taraba state have condemned the continued conflict among residents of the state.

The Nyadan and four other ethnic groups in Lau local government area of Taraba state on Saturday, July 21, signed a peace agreement with the Fulani's living in the state.

Daily Trust reports that the peace agreement was signed during a meeting attended by stakeholders of all the ethnic groups in Mayolope a border town between Taraba and Adamawa states.

In the agreement, the groups resorted to immediately withdraw their militia against any attacks on any of the groups.

They also agreed that security agents be directed to arrest any person or group of persons found with arms while all groups involved join hands in combing all trouble areas and arrest any criminal found there.

Although the groups had blamed each other for allowing third parties intervene and instigate conflict, they however accused forces not residing in the area of preaching disunity by using religion and ethnicity as tools.

Aaron Artimas, a spokesperson to Nyandan said: “We agreed that all the tribes should withdraw their militia and peace and reconciliation committee set up and start building bridges of understanding immediately.

"There is no question of whether you are a Nyandan, Mumuye or Fulani, we are also not talking of religion but all we want is peace and understanding, cohesion and mutual respect."

He said all the groups involved have been living in peace.

Also, the spokesperson for Fulani, Buba Musa said the peace and reconciliation meeting was a good development, asking all parties to be sincere and abide by all the agreements reached.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that in a bid to end the conflict in Taraba state, troops of the Nigerian Army were deployed to the state. The troops under the Exercise Ayem Akpatuma carried out several patrols across the state, curbing attacks by criminal element.

During one of such patrols, the troops recovered arms abandoned by armed bandits in Taraba state in Donga, Donga local government area of the state. The bandits, however, fled the area on sighting the troops advancing towards them.
