Suspected bandits have thrown the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, Katsina, into mourning after a student of the institution, Muhammad Alaka, was killed by suspected bandits operating along Abuja/Kaduna highway.
Punch reports that Alaka, who was attacked alongside other passengers along the highway on Thursday, July 19, was killed while returning to his home town, Ilorin, Kwara state, after his examinations.
NAIJ.com gathers that the student in the English and Literary department of the university, was reportedly shot in the head and died on the spot.
Reacting to the incident, the president of the Association of the Department of English and Literary Students Union, Sahaluddeen Belgore, said: “We are very aggrieved over the sudden demise of one of our colleagues, comrade-in-struggle, spill-over student of department of English, Shehu Kamaladdeen who was shot and killed by armed robbers on his way home along Abuja-Kaduna highway after his last paper.
“Shehu was an active member of the National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies. He held several posts in the departmental association throughout his stay. We have lost not just a member, but a useful brother, counselor and a trusted colleague.
”Without doubt, Alaka has left us without a farewell but the little time he spent with us shall forever live in our memories."
In her own reaction, the university’s spokesperson, Hajiya Fatimah Sanda, said: “We are saddened by the news of the incident and our hearts go to his family. But we are still awaiting official correspondence from the association of Kwara State students on the campus on the incident.”
According to report, the student had since been buried according to Islamic rites.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that a 21-year-old student of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Joseph Ita Archipong, was killed by armed robbers when his family was being robbed.
The unfortunate incident took place around 2:00am at 22 Duncan street, south local government area of the state, on Wednesday, April 25.
