Ogun police kill suspected kidnapper of ex-minister

- Police foil attempt by gang to abduct two businessmen in Abeokuta

A suspected runaway member of a kidnapping gang, Abdullahi Abdullahi, reportedly responsible for the abduction of a former minister of education, Iyabo Anisulowo, has been shot dead by the police after months of manhunt.

The commissioner of police in the state, Ahmed Iliyasu, told reporters at Eleweran police headquarters in Abeokuta, on Tuesday, July 24, that the suspect was killed when his gang attempted to kidnap two businessmen in Abeokuta. He said the targeted victims were Shehu and Alhaji Kabiru.

The police boss stated that the gang arrived Abeokuta from the northern part of the country for the illegal operation, Premium Times reports.

“On the 12th of July 2018,intelligence revealed that some armed bandits who are specialists in kidnapping and armed robbery whose operation cut across the Northern and Southern parts of the country arrived the state,” Iliyasu said.

He said the suspected kidnappers were tracked and trailed by the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) under the command of Uba Adams in Abeokuta before they ever got to their targeted victims.

“Their targets in Ogun State are two businessmen, namely Alhaji Shehu and Alhaji Kabiru. They planned to either rob or kidnap them for ransom. On sighting the policemen, they engaged them in gun battle, but were later subjected to the superior fire power of the police,” the police boss said

In a similar report, armed bandits have reportedly killed four travellers while others were said to have been abducted on Sunday, July 22, along the Kaduna-Abuja highway. The Kaduna state commissioner of police, Austin Iwar, told Channels TV that the force is on the trail of the bandits

The attack by the armed bandits was said to have occurred around 6pm near Gidan Busa village, located between Jere and Kateri communities, along the expressway.

An eyewitness said the bandits mounted a road block on the highway and started shooting when motorists returning from Kaduna to Abuja in different vehicles approached the road block.
