Senatorial aspirant condemns kilings in Taraba

- A senatorial aspirant on the platform of the PDP, Mathias Agbu, said that the killings in Southern Taraba are disheartening

- Agbu explained that the level of poverty in the state has also contributed to the security crisis

- The senatorial aspirant said there was need to reduce the poverty level especially in local communities

Mathias Agbu, a senatorial aspirant to the Taraba South senatorial district on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has described the incessant killings in Southern Taraba as disheartening, Vanguard reports.

NAIJ.com gathered that Agbu said: “The incessant attacks on villages in southern Taraba and the rising criminality in Jalingo, the Taraba state capital is worrisome.”

The PDP senatorial aspirant continued saying: “Conflicts are rampant in our country because, among other challenges, majority of our people are seriously very poor. Studies have confirmed that conflicts thrive where poverty is endemic."

Agbu also noted that, part of the problem is that “like most others do, Taraba do not have a proper representation at the federal level.

"They’ve been surcharged for a long time because politics has been played as a selfish game by majority of the leaders.”

Agbu called for measures to reduce poverty level in the local communities especially, if the state is interested in reducing the current level of conflicts.

In a previous report by NAIJ.com, the alleged masterminds of the killings in Taraba state were said to have been arrested by the Nigerian Army.

The director of army public relations, Brig Gen Texas Chukwu, in a statement obtained by NAIJ.com on Saturday, April 14, said that two persons connected with killings in Taraba state had been caught by troops involved in a military operation in the area.
