Lagos boat accident claims 5 lives

- A boat capsized on Wednesday, July 25, and killed no fewer than five people in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state

- The capsized boat belonging to Blue Sea was traveling from Lagos Island

- According to the Lagos State Emergency and Management Agency, five persons, comprising four female and one male, were rescued alive

No fewer than five people were killed after a boat capsized mid-sea in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state while traveling from Lagos Island on Wednesday, July 25.

Punch reports that the cause of the accident is yet to be established. The capsized boat belongs to a firm identified as Blue Sea.

Legit.ng gathers that the corpses of the victims, four male and one female, had been deposited at the morgue of the Ikorodu General Hospital. The incident was confirmed by the general manager of the Lagos State Emergency and Management Agency, Adesina Tiamiyu.

Tiamiyu, who stated that recovery efforts were still ongoing, said: “The agency received the distress call at about 5.57 pm and on arrival at the scene, it was observed that a 20-capacity passenger boat belonging to Blue Sea capsized mid-sea en route Ikorodu from Lagos Island.

“Unfortunately, five persons - four adult females and one adult male - were confirmed dead and their bodies were deposited at the morgue of the Ikorodu General Hospital. Five persons, comprising four female and one male, were rescued alive.

“The exercise was carried out by the combined efforts of LASEMA, LASWA, LASAMBUS and SEHMU. The number of other rescued victims cannot be ascertained as they were brought to the jetty with other passing boats."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that no fewer than four persons died on Wednesday, May 30, in a boat accident at Akere in Ipokia local government area of Ogun.

Several others were said to be missing after the incident which was said to have occurred at about 11 am on the waterways.
