SARS operative shot dead by policemen who thought he was a kidnapper

- A SARS operative has been shot dead by policemen in Anambra state

- The police had got a distressed call from people in the environment that the SARS operative was trying to abduct somebody

- Policemen involved in the fatal shooting will reportedly face orderly room trial

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) manning a private residence in Alor, Idemili South local government area of Anambra state, have allegedly killed an operative of the the Special Anti Robbery Squad mistaken for a kidnapper.

The Punch reports that a police source who pleaded anonymity said the deceased, whose identity could not be confirmed as of press time, was mistaken for a kidnapper by his colleagues.

The source said: “He (the deceased) accompanied one of his colleagues to somebody’s residence to effect an arrest at about 4.30 am.

“They were handcuffing their suspect when somebody who did not know that they were SARS operatives alerted some policemen on guard in a private residence in the neighbourhood.

“The neighbour had told the policemen that kidnappers were trying to abduct someone.

“As soon as the policemen arrived the scene and saw the SARS operatives, they opened fire at them and gunned down the deceased, thinking they were kidnappers.

“It was minutes after that his colleagues identified him as a SARS operative on special duty."

The Officer-in-charge of SARS at Awkuzu, Sunday Okpe, has also confirmed the incident. The accused policemen would allegedly face orderly room trial.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Nigeria Police in Lagos has dismissed four officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of zone 2 command in Lagos, Adamu Ibrahim on Sunday, July 22, upheld a recommendation of the police disciplinary body that the officers be sacked.

A statement by the police public relations officer, Dolapo Badmus, said the SARS officials were dismissed and subsequently charged to court on offences of armed robbery, kidnapping, unlawful detention, intimidation and threatening violence against residents.
