Breaking: Saraki officially dumps APC

Senate president, Bukola Saraki, has announced his exit from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Saraki announced his exit from the party via his official social media pages on Tuesday, July 31. He said he decided to leave the APC after extensive consultations.

There has been speculation that Saraki may soon leave the APC following the defection of 13 lawmakers elected on the platform of the party to the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress.

Shortly after the mass defection, the rest of the APC lawmakers met with President Muhammadu Buhari to discuss the situation of the party. At the meeting, the president reportedly urged the APC senators to stand steadfast and work for the party.

Saraki was however absent at the meting thereby fueling more speculation that he was no longer a member of the APC.

Senator Abdullahi Adamu in reaction to Saraki's absence said that his colleagues who defected from the APC to the PDP have committed political blunders which will be the biggest mistakes of their lives.

In an interview with Daily Trust, the lawmaker representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District said some of them have never really been in the PDP.

Asked what he would have done if Saraki had appeared at the APC meeting with President Buhari, Adamu said: “I would have sent him out. I would have told them that ‘you don’t belong here; you betrayed the president. You want to continue with the game of betrayal? Get out of this place.’

“There were speculations that some of you were planning to change the leadership of the Senate on that Tuesday, how true is that?

“I don’t talk about things that don’t happen. If there was an action, manifest, you can ask questions about it. But when you speculate, I don’t go for speculations. We’re talking reality. People said they decamped from one party to another, that’s a reality. I was there when it happened, and I can talk about it like I’m doing now. But whether there was an intention to change the leadership, that is speculation.
