They all want a share of the national cake - Ex-Senate president reacts to mass defections

- Ameh Ebute says no political party in Nigeria has the needed ideology

- Ebute believes that Nigerian politicians are more concerned with sharing the 'national cake'

- He condemns proliferation of political parties in the country

A former Senate president of Nigeria, Ameh Ebute, has reacted to the gale of defections that hit the All Progressives Congress (APC) recently saying politicians are taking such actions because political parties in the country lack ideologies.

Leadership reports that Ebute spoke at the launch of Good Governance Ambassadors of Nigeria (GOGAN).

According to him, the only ideology available to the politicians in Nigeria is the national cake which every one of them wants to share from.

“At the moment, there is no political party with a clear ideology in the country and that is the reason politicians and lawmakers jump from one party to another.

"The only ideology we have now is that there is a national cake and everybody wants to have a share of it. So, they keep floating political parties.

“Why confuse the common man with 65 political parties, when in actual fact only two are performing.

I’m, therefor, in support of two party system because this will enable politicians to choose whether to be progressive or conservative.

“The current defection of party members from one party to another has automatically grouped Nigerian politicians into two broad categories: the self-serving politicians and the public interest serving politicians,” he said.

Legit.ng earlier reported that many Nigerians reacted to the defection of Senate president, Bukola Saraki to the Peoples Democratic Party late Tuesday, July 31.

Interestingly, the reactions that followed Saraki's exit from the APC ranged from outright jubilation from some sections of Nigerians to ironic acceptance by another section.

Nigerians who hailed the senate president's decision to jump ship claimed the APC-led federal government has failed the people and as such, deserved to be abandoned by a politician of Saraki's calibre.
