The special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on the Niger Delta, Charles Quaker Dokubo, has solicited the support of leaders in the oil rich region to ensure the president’s re-election in 2019 general elections.
Daily Trust reports that Dokubo, who is also the coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), called on all the people of the Niger Delta to ensure that the current peace enjoyed in the region is maintained.
He made this known during a visit to a Niger Delta activist and peace advocate, Chief Mike Ekayama Loyibo.
He said the region had a lot to benefit from the current peace and the president’s re-election.
Dokubo, in a statement in Abuja, said the Presidential Amnesty Programme was at a critical stage and needed the support of all patriotic and peace-loving Niger Deltans for it to achieve the desired results.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that President Buhari announced that he would seek re-election in 2019.
The development was made public by the president's personal assistant on new media, Bashir Ahmed. Ahmad took to his Twitter handle, @BashirAhmaad, to announce the development on Monday, April 9.
He further disclosed that the president made the announcement during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the APC.
In a related development, President Buhari urged his supporters to stop campaigning for his re-election.
The president noted that some zealous supporters have been engaging in what could be interpreted as campaigns even months before the INEC is due to lift the embargo on such.
In a statement signed by his media aide, Femi Adesina, Buhari pleaded with his supporters to be patient and not let them be seen as breaking the law.
