2019 election will not be determined by politicians - Group reacts to Saraki’s defection to PDP

- The Yoruba Youths Congress (YYC) wants Bukola Saraki to resign as president of Senate

- The YYC laments that Nigerian politicians take the electorate for granted because of their ambitions and interests

- The group declares that the youths and electorate would determine who govern them in 2019

The Yoruba Youths Congress (YYC), on Friday, August 3, demanded for the resignation of the president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, for defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The YYC, however, said its demand was not personal but based on the need to ensure peace at the National Assembly.

The Nation reports that Prince Dapo Adepoju, the president of the group who spoke in Akure, Ondo state, said it was not moral for Saraki to continue to remain as the Senate president after his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

While lamenting that politicians were taking the people for granted with their actions, he noted that the PDP, which he called the minority, cannot lead the Senate.

“Our call is to ensure that the national assembly is peaceful, the situation whereby 109 senators will set Nigeria ablaze because of their selfish interest will not be acceptable by the Nigerian youths.

“The activities of the 8th assembly under Saraki has been retrogressive, in fact the present National Assembly is the most politicized senate since we returned to democratic rule in 1999,” he said.

The report quoted Adepoju as declaring that the 2019 general election will not be determined by politicians but the electorate who are mostly youths.

Adepoju further warned the APC to avoid victimising any person who defects to another party since partisan politics is ‘free entry and exit’.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that as the battle to unseat the president of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, allegedly by senators on the platform of the All Progressives Congress thickened, their colleagues from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stormed Abuja.

The PDP senators are reportedly in Abuja to stop any of such plan against Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.
