Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is reportedly keen on bringing Borussia Dortmund ace Julian Weigl to the Premier League before the end of the summer transfer season.
According to a UK Daily Star report citing sources at The Times, scouts from the Premier League champions have kept vigil on the Germany international, as Guardiola looks to add quality in the midfield.
Interestingly, the 22-year-old has been with the Bundesliga outfit since 2015 and is currently regarded as one of Germany’s most talented players.
Already, Weigl is in the good books of Liverpool’s German manager Jurgen Klopp, who is a known to be a supporter of the midfielder. And it now sounds as if Man City boss Guardiola is following the same path as well.
The report suggests, Guardiola is eager to bring new addition to offer Fernandinho competition, with Fred and Jorginho joining Manchester United and Chelsea respectively.
The City manager hinted he is keen on sealing a deal ahead of Thursday’s summer transfer deadline.
Reacting after City’s 2-0 win over Chelsea, in the Community Shield showdown at Wembley, he hinted of their plans: “I don’t know. We are trying.
“We would like to find maybe one more because we don’t have two specific players to substitute Fernandinho.
“But, if he doesn’t come, there will not be anyone else.
“I was focused on the final today, so we will just see what happens.”
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munichen boss claimed last week that midfielder Douglas Luiz, loaned to Girona last summer, can play a role in the first team if he is get a work permit.
However, there is yet no news yet of his current status, nor is there hints about Joe Hart's expected switch to Burnley.
"I don't know (the latest situation)," Guardiola said.
"I know they are in touch, but I don't know if it's already done because I didn't speak with the club, I didn't speak with Txiki (Begiristain, City's director of football) about Joe."
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously had reported that Manchester City have announced the £60m signing of Algeria international Riyad Mahrez from rivals Leicester City.
The 27-year-old Riyad Mahrez now becomes Manchester City's first signing since the Citizens won the 2017/18 Premier League title.
In January, Rihad Mahrez wanted to force a move to Manchester City, but Leicester City chiefs refused to give an approval, and now that he has joined the Etihad club, he will have the chance to play in the Champions League.
