Real Madrid new manager Julen Lopetegui believes a change in tactics is what is required at the Santiago Benerbau following the exit of star forward Cristiano Ronaldo, and has revealed the squad member who will now step into the role vacated by the Portuguese.
According to The Mirror quoting sources at Spain’s AS, the ex-La Roja boss sees Spanish forward Marco Asensio playing the role of a False 9 in his Los Blancos squad, with the 22-year-old shunning out a decent performance against Serie A champions Juventus in the role during their pre-season friendly victory in Washington on Saturday.
With the proceeding locked at 1-1 at the break, Asensio came on from the subs bench at half-time and immediately took up a False 9 role in between new additions Vinicius Junior and Lucas Vazquez, who came also come on as the quartet of Isco, Karim Benzema and goalscorer Gareth Bale were departing.
Asensio then turned the heat and ended up netting a brace in the first 10 minutes of the second half to seal Los Blancos 3-1 win.
And Lopetegui was satisfied with his show from the new position during the contest.
"I do not like that term (False 9), but yes, it's an alternative and with me it's not the first time he does it," he said after the match.
"You have to look for resources and at specific moments you can act there or in other situations. The important thing is not where you play, but how you play."
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously had reported that Real Madrid showed their true potentials to take opponents to the cleaners after Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit by thrashing his new team Juventus 3-1 in the International Champions Cup on Saturday.
The Portuguese superstar ended his nine-year stay at the Santiago Bernabéu after sealing a massive deal to the Serie A Champions in July.
The 33-year-old did not play any role during the pre-season exhibition fixture at FedEx Field, as he continued training at the club base in Turin ahead of the new season.
