South Africans took to social media to pay tribute to Khensani Maseko, the Rhodes University student, who killed herself this past weekend after being sexually assaulted in May, this year.
Only a couple of days after the ladies of South Africa took to the streets to protest abuse against women, Maseko, a victim of sexual assault, killed herself at her parents’ home in Joburg on Friday, August 3.
According to reports, Maseko was sexually assaulted by her boyfriend in May this year. The incident apparently left the third year student with emotional scars.
East Coast Radio reported that the young Economic Freedom Forum member’s last posts on Instagram were proof of the pain she lived with.
NAIJ.com saw messages in honour of Maseko flooding social media, some South African celebs even paid tribute to the young woman, including Boity and Nomzamo Mbatha.

Blessing Mashudu Phathela, who goes by the Twitter handle @phat_blessy, wrote: “I’m angry because we live in a world where she might never get justice. I’m sad because she must have been hurting so much even death became an option. I’m afraid because I can’t protect myself and the women I love from being violated and raped #KhensaniMaseko #RIPKhensani.”
While women and a lot of men paid tribute to the late varsity student, some men showed the problem in South Africa through their comments.
