Saraki says he will quit if he loses support of fellow senators

Senate president Bukola Saraki has said he will step down from the leadership of the Senate if he loses the support of fellow lawmaker in the upper chamber.

Saraki made the statement on Wednesday, August 8, when addressing journalists at a press conference held at the National Assembly to address the recent siege laid to the Assembly complex by the Department of State Security (DSS), Daily Trust reports.

He noted that he and other presiding officers of the National Assembly will quit if they lose the support of their fellow lawmakers.

“This is not about us. This is about the rule of law. We will leave the day we no longer enjoy the support of the members," the Senate president said.

Saraki insisted he will remain in his position so long as he enjoys the support of his colleagues who elected him.

“I will not give in (to pressure). I will not. I was elected by members,” he said when responded to a question on his plan on calls for his removal.

Meanwhile, Bukola Saraki has denied allegations that he compromised Lawal Daura, the director-general of the State Security Service who was sacked.

Saraki has been accused by the ruling All Progressives Congress and its supporters online that he was the one who plotted the controversial blockade of the National Assembly.

But the Senate president denied involvement in the siege, adding that Nigerians could not be fooled by such claims.
