10 important things from Saraki's world press conference

After the Tuesday, August 7, siege on the National Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS), Senate President Bukola Saraki at a world press conference on Wednesday, August 8, reacted to the siege.

Saraki's reaction comes after the acting president, Yemi Osinbajo, ordered the termination of the DSS director general, Lawal Daura and his immediate arrest and questioning for his alleged involvement in the seige.

Below are 10 key points taken from the senate president's statement at the conference:

1. Today, we are here to talk about democracy and it is not time to talk about my presidential ambition

2. I was elected as Senate president. Our constitution is clear that members of the Senate can elect their president

3. The siege is an act of cowardice by those who want to carry out an impeachment of the leadership of the Senate in flagrant disregard of the law

4. By the actions that Nigerians took yesterday, they demonstrated our strong resolve as a nation not to give ground to oppression

5. The legislature, more than any other institution in this country, more than any other arm of government represents the will of the people

6. We are elected by the people, and an assault on the legislature is an assault on the people of Nigeria

7. Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, did the right thing

PAY ATTENTION:

8. The damage control does not address the question of how this atrocity happened in the first place. It should have been done earlier and we will hold the government responsible for consistency

9. This is an incident concerning which we have on good authority, has been in the planning for months, and yet it was allowed to happen

10. We (National Assembly) have no need for external security

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com earlier reported that Saraki has expressed his misgivings about the All Progressive Congress (APC) -led government and the way politics is presently played in the country.

Speaking to a gathering of journalists at the NASS chambers, Saraki said that the current state of things in the polity was not what the electorate bargained for.
