- Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso's defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sparked jubilation in Nasarawa state
- Supporters of the former governor of Kano state have followed their leader into his new party
- Many of them openly burnt brooms, the symbol of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)
Supporters of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s political group, Kwankwansiyya Movement in Nasarawa state, on Wednesday, August 8, joined their leader by dumping the APC for the PDP.
The supporters of Kwankwaso stormed the state secretariat of the PDP and declared their defection from the APC with symbolic burning of brooms.
The Kwankwassiya group in the state was led by Architect Aminu Dabo, who represented Senator Kwankwaso.
Dabo said the return of Kwankwaso to the PDP was caused by political injustice and humiliation by fellow citizens.
Responding, the state PDP chairman, Francis Orogu, assured the defectors of equal opportunity in the party and encouraged them to register with the PDP at ward and local government levels.

Meanwhile, the speaker of the Kano House of Assembly, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, said Kwankwaso's defection isn't a surprise.
Abdulahi said Kwankwaso was only a symbol in the APC and his exit wasn't unexpected, adding that his decision was long overdue.
However, he added that the senator's edit won't affect the party's chances of winning the 2019 general elections.
