Birthdays are generally a big deal across the world and like fine wine, it gets better as you grow older. However, the same cannot be said for a Nigerian man who just turned 100 years, whilst serving prison term.
A while ago, NAIJ.com came across the sad story of a man identified Celestine Egboluche who was allegedly imprisoned with his son Paul and a 78-year-old man identified as Kanayo Arinze, over what is believed to be a land tussle that led to the death of someone.
Well, Pa Celestine who was 99-year-old as at the time of the report, recently turned 100 years, making him the oldest prisoner in Nigeria. The centenarian who has been in the Enugu Maximum Prison for over 17 years was condemned to the death over his alleged crime.
It is tragic to see that while others are out there celebrating and marking their birthdays, Pa Celestine is forced to mark his in a prison on death row, where he may likely pass on, still serving the sentence.
However, an NGO, Global Society for Anti-corruption (GSAC), is pushing for the centenarian’s release.
Egbunuche is said to have suffered from diabetes over the years. GSAC has appealed to the federal government and governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha to have mercy and release him, his 78 years old relation and son from prison.
