A 26-year-old man, Yusuf Duguri, and his 45-year-old partner, Abubakar Adamu, have been arrested by policemen in Niger state, for alleged theft.
According to Punch, quoting Northern City News, both men had approached one Umar Abdulazeez of Bagdad Motors, Bauchi, pretending that they wanted to buy his Honda Accord car with registration number YAB734 AR.
NAIJ.com gathers that both men zoomed off with the car, after the dealer gave them the keys to test it.
The suspects who are believed to have hypnotised their victim with charms, were eventually apprehended while negotiating to sell the stolen vehicle in Suleja.
During his confession, Duguri reportedly said he and his partner had acted on a tip-off by informants who benefited from the proceeds of theft.
He said: “We operate in all the states in the North, depending on the location of the vehicle. Once our informant calls us and tells us the location of a vehicle, we will rush there immediately to dispossess the owner.
“I wanted to stop it (car theft), but when my wife and father died the same day, I had to look for money to remarry because I can’t stay alone.
“Honestly, my plan was that once I got enough money to marry, I would quit the business.”
He said his inability to get a job was what led him into crime; disclosing that he is a professional driver.
He said: “I am a qualified driver, but nobody wanted me to drive their vehicle. That was why I joined this gang that has ruined my life.”
The Police public relations officer, Muhammad Abubakar, said the suspects would be charged to court, pending the conclusion of investigations into the matter.
He further disclosed that both men had confessed to stealing three vehicles from Bauchi, before they were arrested in Suleja.
