I have no special candidate for PDP presidential race - Governor Okowa tells Makarfi

- Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has declared that he has no anointed candidate for the PDP presidential race

- He said he would remain neutral and allow delegates to decide who will be the party's candidate

- Okowa made the declaration while playing host to the party's former acting chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state on Monday, August 13, declared his neutral posture in the jostle for presidential ticket under the the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform.

New Telegraph reports that the governor urged the immediate past national chairman of the party and former Governor of Kaduna state, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, who came to consult him on his presidential ambition in Asaba to go after the delegates and get their support before the primary election of the party.

NAIJ.com gathered that he said since there was no automatic ticket for any aspirant and the era of imposition of candidates has gone, it behoves on aspirants for elective offices to engage the delegates in campaign for good governance.

He said: “I am trying to stay as neutral as possible in the interest of our party. Delta is a home for all. The people of the state are intelligent. They are also aware of the role you played to stabilize the party.”

But Makarfi, who maintained that he was not an opportunist in the race, expressed confidence that the party would present a credible candidate to be its flag-bearer next year.

He listed the power sector and security agencies among areas that are in dire need of restructuring in Nigeria.

While he said insecurity would be tackled headlong if he wins the presidency, he said students’ loan scheme would be instituted to address the menace of school dropouts.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had previously reported that a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said he had a horrible experience plying the roads in the southeast region.

The senator stated this in Owerri when he visited the Imo state PDP secretariat. It was gathered that Makarfi said he travelled by road because he wanted to feel the pains of the masses so as to solve them.

Makarfi had said: “As I was coming from Enugu to Owerri, the roads are bad. It is shocking. That is why I said 90 per cent of my campaign will be on road projects. Some people asked me to come by air and I said no, why should I do that? I want to feel the experience of our people and know their pains in view of solving them."
