- A group identified as the Igbo Leaders of Thought has demanded for a new constitution
- The group says a new constitution should replace the 1999 constitution before the forthcoming general elections
- It says there are irregularities in the military-drafted 1999 constitution
As the 2019 general elections approach, the Igbo Leaders of Thought (ILT) has demanded for a fresh Nigerian constitution that would be adopted for operation before the elections.
Vanguard reports that the group is calling for a new constitution because of what it described as irregularities in the military-drafted constitution.
NAIJ.com gathers that ILT stated this in a communique made available in Enugu on Tuesday, August 14, in which its leader, Professor Ben Nwabueze, said there was a general rejection of the 1999 constitution because it was drawn by people who were not acceptable to the people.
Nwabueze said in the communique he signed: “The Igbo Leaders of Thought (ILT) calls for immediate setting up of a constituent assembly to prepare a new constitution before 2019 elections."
Speaking on corruption, Nwabueze said: “The Igbo Leaders of Thought feels that the solution to corruption is to resolve political corruption which includes nepotism, appointment on basis of religious faith, protection of loyalists who are known to be mainfestly corrupt, expenditure of public funds without budgeting. ILT strongly condenms the government selective approach to the fight against corruption.”
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that a group, Nigeria Ethnic Nationalities Youth Presidents (NENYP), disagreed with some Igbo leaders who said Ndigbo were more interested in restructuring of the country than producing the presidency in 2023.
The group in a statement said they were interested in the restructuring of the country as well as the presidency which “is our constitutional right”.
The group said: “We wish to disagree with the trending story that Ndigbo are not interested in producing a president in 2023 but in restructuring. We are amused that those making these statements are not speaking the minds of majority of Igbo but the minds of their paymasters who are only out to deceive Ndigbo to get their votes in 2019."
